Terry Phinney is a member of the advisory team at Narva & Company. His work over the past twenty years has focused on improving strategy and business systems in family companies and consequently, increasing enterprise value. The majority of Terry’s work has focused on developing collaborative, pragmatic and lasting solutions to the complex problems that face family held companies.
Terry has significant functional and management experience in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, financial services and distribution. In his capacity as a strategist, he has developed succession options and growth strategies for family owned paint manufacturing companies and filter media companies. As a change agent, he has been hired as an interim executive to lead transformations in Human Resources, Information Technology and Sales. As an outside consultant and interim COO, he was engaged to revitalize a systems consulting firm that provided research, benchmarking and consulting services to asset managers. He has also sold and delivered products and services for financial service firms and management consulting firms.
Terry has been successful with family owned businesses as he leverages their culture and strengths to competitive advantage while improving less effective business systems and processes. He is able to focus family companies on sustainable paths that satisfy both the needs of the family and the business. He uses an approach that engages the entire system while improving skills and broadening perspectives. Terry’s approach enables family companies to understand and own their challenges and consequently, succeed over the long term. As a result, his clients are self reliant, successful and significantly more valuable.
In addition to working with Narva and Company, Terry founded Phinney and Associates, a consulting and advisory firm that builds profitability and value for family owned companies. Using a structured and collaborative process, Terry has enabled family owned companies to grow and develop succession options. This allows his clients to execute their plans with confidence, not from limited options.
Terry’s academic background includes and AB from Harvard College and an MBA from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business Administration. He serves on the advisory boards of several family owned firms and is active in the Family Firm Institute and the Exit Planning Exchange in the Boston area.
